When I was a high school English teacher so many years ago, I used to envy the teachers of science and math just a bit. What they taught seem to be so clearcut with right and wrong answers. Teaching English was different. Rather than right and wrong answers you had weak answers, good answers, and occasionally really great answers. I think that is why so many educators cling to the few concrete aspects of English like grammar and spelling.

Design is like that. It can be hard to define. Is it beautiful images, clever layout, or something else? Web designers argue about what is more important content or design? If you have to choose, pick content, but why not have both? The ideal is a beautifully designed website that has good content in an attractive, easy-to-use format.

I remember reading a quote by a designer of BMW engines who said that even engineers are influenced by beautiful lines and proportions and that an automobile engine should perform well and look good.

Next time you are looking at a brochure or a website, think about that BMW engine and ask if the piece will get you down the road in style.

So here is my first blog. I hope over the coming months to have something to say that is useful or entertaining.

I have been in marketing communications for more about 30 years, the last 20 or so at my own business, Clearpoint Communications, Inc. Looking back at that number, 30 years, I am a bit shocked.

Let’s see, I was a technical editor, writer, and then product manager for network control systems at Codex which was a division of Motorola for about 5 years. Then I was the sole writer at Haemonetics which manufactures blood processing devices. Haemo is now a $400 million or so company but when I worked there it was $37 million and just beginning to take off. I was at Haemo for about 5 years. I then founded Clearpoint and have been working for myself for nearly 20 years. So, 5 + 5 + 20, that really is 30 years. I am still learning every day and look forward to going to work most days.

Oh and I was a high school English teacher for four years before everything else. Now that was a tough job.
